Goju spirit enjoyed at IGK VIC Camp

IGK Victorian Spring Camp 2017

IGK VIC Spring Camp Anglesea 2017The IGK Victorian Spring Camp 2017 held at Eumeralla Scout Camp in Anglesea from Oct 13th-15th 2017 was a wonderful success.  The  camp was well attended with IGK Tasmania members visiting for the weekend. Perfect weather, plentiful food, strong training with lots of new information made for a great event. For the Victorians, it was great to train with IGK Tasmania, renew old friendships and make new ones.

There were plenty of training sessions including a Sunday morning early beach training at Point Roadnight on a mild, windless morning on a beautiful ocean beach where we practised awase kumite and Sanchin kata before a hearty breakfast.

Thanks to John Ross Shihan & Lambros Kallianiotis Shidoin from IGK Headquarters Victoria for a wonderful camp at Anglesea this past weekend. A big Osu for the organisation, catering, Goju training and inspiration. There is no doubt about the value of the intensity and concentration of knowledge and training obtained at a camp so all efforts should be made to attend.

Thanks to IGK Tasmania led by Noel Peters Kyoshi for making the trip across the paddock to join in and bring their strong Goju spirit. We all look forward to joining IGK Tasmania for their Winter Camp in 2018.  See the camp photos taken by attending members.

Noel Peters Kyoshi Shares with ABC News

Ever wondered what it takes to become a karate black belt? Explore the life of 56-year-old Hobart bricklayer Noel Peters Kyoshi to find out how more than 40 years of perseverance and 13 hours of training a week helped him climb the ranks and become Tasmania’s top Goju-Ryu karate master.

Noel Peters Kyoshi has devoted his life to Goju-ryu karate and he’s passing on the secrets of the martial art which has been centuries in the making.

This excellent article can be read at ABC News.  There are some great photographs by Aneeta Bhole and Gregor Salmon at ABC and the production is magnificent. Noel Peters Kyoshi Interview

Noel Peters Kyoshi IGK Tasmania
Noel Peters Kyoshi
(top left) of Sandy Bay, Tasmania has been a bricklayer who has practiced Karate for forty years. He is now the highest ranked Tasmanian in IGK Karate, a ‘Kyoshi’. He told Melanie Tait of ABC Radio that he came to karate originally to learn how to fight, but forty years on it’s become an integral part of his Zen lifestyle, bleeding into all parts of his life.

By day, Noel works as a bricklayer, a job he credits karate with giving him the patience for, and the fitness. “You need strength of character to be a bricklayer”, says Noel. He explains that Karate and bricklaying work well together though because being a bricklayer is a hard job where you have to work sometimes in bad weather, hot or cold and you need self-discipline to see out the day.

As far as his health and fitness are concerned, he believes he probably couldn’t have stayed in bricklaying so long without his ongoing devotion to karate – it definitely helps his back as Karate keeps the back flexible. Noel says there’s Zen in bricklaying, the rhythm in laying bricks isn’t unlike the focused movement of Karate.

In the interview with ABC Radio HOBART, Noel describes how he’s managed forty years of training, how it keeps getting better and how he sold a beloved car to fund the club’s new ‘dojo’ (training centre) in Sandford, Tasmania.

Health Benefits of Martial Arts

IGK Tino Ceberano Karate and Self-defense Instruction

Many young Australians grow up training in one of the martial arts and many give it away before choosing it as a healthy lifestyle choice for the long term. In this modern digital age with more hours spent lazily at the computer, there are more reasons than ever to consider the many health benefits of regular martial arts training and the pitfalls of sitting for endless hours on your bum!

  • Total body workout: Martial arts are a high-aerobic workout that uses every muscle group in the body. Your stamina, muscle tone, flexibility, balance and strength will all improve through martial arts. By participating in martial arts, you can greatly improve the amount of muscle mass you have in your body. The more muscle you have, the more toned your body will look.

The higher your muscle mass, the higher your metabolic demands will be, and subsequently the more calories you will burn each day, thereby helping prevent obesity and even leading to potential weight loss. High levels of muscle mass also lead to increased agility, thereby preventing falls as you age. Falls are one of the highest risks of death for aging people.

  • Healthy lifestyle: Due to the total-body nature of a martial arts workout, tons of calories are burned during every class. However, you’ll also find that your natural eating signals become better regulated, so food cravings will disappear and you’ll eat less as a result.
  • Self confidence: Due to the goal setting, positive encouragement and respect for values that are part of all martial arts programs, the greatest benefit usually reported by martial arts students is greater self-confidence. You become more comfortable in all situations – whether you’re in danger or simply doing a task that takes you beyond your comfort zone — and you’ll discover you can accomplish anything you set your mind to.
  • Improved cardiovascular health: Research has found that the only real way to improve the status of the cardiovascular system is by participating in activities that stress the heart, such as martial arts. One of the most important exercise benefits associated with martial arts is an improvement in your cardiovascular health.

Your cardiovascular system is composed of your heart, as well as the veins and arteries that transport blood. A weak cardiovascular system can result in shortness of breath, weakness, fatigue, and in severe cases can even cause a heart attack. Research has found that the only real way to improve the status of the cardiovascular system is by participating in activities that stress the heart

  • Weight loss: A one hour session of moderate intensity martial arts can burn up to 500 calories.
  • Improved reflexes: Research has found that by participating in martial arts, you not only improve your reflexes while performing the activity, but actually experience faster reaction times during all activities of your life. This is very important in a number of daily activities, such as driving.
  • Focus and stillness: As Bruce Lee pointed out, behind the punches, kicks and knees, a true martial artist learns to sit with himself and see where his weaknesses are. As a martial artist, your will learn what it is to be still, challenged and focused.
  • Teaches great morals and values: Martial arts wisdom has it that after consistent practice, one becomes less impulsive and aggressive towards others. Our own dojo kun speaks of honour, respect and chivalry to remind students of the right attitude, frame of mind and virtues to strive for inside and outside the studio.
  • Muscle tone: By participating in martial arts, you can greatly improve the amount of muscle mass you have in your body. The higher your muscle mass, the higher your metabolic demands will be, and subsequently the more calories you will burn each day, thereby helping prevent obesity and promote weight loss. High levels of muscle mass also lead to increased agility, thereby preventing falls as you age.
  • Better mood: Researchers have found that participating in a regular exercise routine is one of the best ways to improve your mood. Performing martial arts is not only a good way to relieve stress and frustration, but may actually help to make you happier. The endorphins released by physical activity appear to be active in your body for as many as four hours after exercise.

In summary, there are many great reasons to regularly practice the martial arts, such as

  • Improve your physical and mental health
  • Build self-esteem and strengthen your self-confidence
  • Improve your academic performance by raising your level of energy, focus and concentration
  • Learn and master self-defense techniques
  • Make friends in the many IGK dojos available in Australia

Classroom Martial Arts

Bullying at school is never far out of the spotlight. It’s an unfortunate reality that most parents have to deal with at some time. While there are many policies and approaches taken by schools and parents, one wonders if getting to the grass-roots and finding a preventive action is not best. This video discusses the merits of teaching martial arts in schools.

The martial arts have always upheld standards of granting respect and dignity to others and children who learn martial arts of any style learn these principles very early on. It is not only the respect to their instructors or teachers that is drilled but to each other as well.

International Goju Karatedo was founded by Hanshi Tino Ceberano in 1989.
The benefits of improved self-esteem, self-confidence and self-respect that children attain by practicing the martial arts are thought to reduce the chances that they will attract the attention of bullies who generally seek out those weaker than themselves while they are looking for easy prey.

A lack of confidence plays a big factor in who the bully selects to intimidate. Another big benefit of martial arts is the friendship that is promoted in classes, and the co-operative and respectful training can bridge cultural differences that sometimes give rise to bullying.

Martial arts can encourage role playing such as encouraging children to react calmly and confidently to taunting. Teaching your child how to show confidence rather than shyness and vulnerability can reduce their chances of being a victim. Children can learn to look people in the eye and speak up when they talk.

There is an argument that martial arts programs teach children to fight, not in fact reduce violence.  There is truth in the saying “We learn to fight in the martial arts so we do not have to”. A martial artist walks with confidence, but rarely has to use their skills. Any bully can sense it.

Self-defence classes, as with any physical education program for children of this age, can be a fun way to learn new skills and keep active.  The benefits of exercise, learning new psychomotor skills, achieving balance and coordination are undisputed and sorely needed in this digital age of couch-sitting, tablet-browsing screenagers with an increasing obesity level.

Physical activity and sport can be a powerful learning tool where children learn to respect each other and themselves and where they can be proud of their improvements. Undoubtedly self-defence can play a positive role as long the program is taught with high standards of safety and control.

Martial arts teach respect, honour, self-value, the right to protect one’s self and perhaps most importantly that violence is never the answer to conflict. It would seem there are some very good reasons to provide martial arts programs in schools when many children cannot access programs after school, similar to learning music at school.

Tino Ceberano Marital Arts - IGK
Tino Ceberano Hanshi
says “I’ve had the pleasure of being one of the advisory consultants to the program called the ‘Skills for Life’ and there are proven benefits in what it provides for youth at schools.

He states that legitimate martial arts programs in schools have great value and that the structured exercise benefits would impart more self-confidence in kids and reduce bullying.

Tino Hanshi said that even three months of basic karate training has been shown to positively channel the childrens’ energies as evidenced by his own personal teaching experience in coastal Queensland.

IGK Victorian Headquarters Kids ClassesActivities like karate are a fun way for both boys and girls to achieve fitness and focus. Some parents may think they also promote violence, but that’s a myth, according to experts.

The martial arts actually help teach self-discipline and socialization skills. In fact, many parents whose children have attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) report great success with these programs because self-control and concentration are exactly the skills underdeveloped in ADHD kids.

John Ross Shihan from IGK VIC Headquarters at Canterbury says “Through martial arts, students can learn from their peers, develop discipline, and cultivate respect for different cultures. Martial arts strengthen muscles and endurance, while improving flexibility, balance, agility and coordination. ”

Lambros Kallianiotis Shidoin from IGK VIC Headquarters at Canterbury says that IGK dojos promote exercise that not only keeps children in good shape, but also helps them in developing positive attitude and teaching them discipline. Conducting martial arts classes in or outside of the school will let your students achieve better grades, perform better at sports and also hopefully behave well at home.

Tino Ceberano Hanshi says “If the IGK had the opportunity to assist in teaching our programs in schools, the self-respect, self-confidence and courtesy they gain through our martial arts classes will surely give them an advantage in not just school but also in their life, relationships and on their outlook towards life.

Teaching martial arts at schools certainly has its merits but regular training a few times a week may not be realistic in a school environment? Dedicated dojos with highly qualified personell trained to rigourous standards may provide better outcomes. There are pros and cons for both.

The Breathing of Goju

Tino Ceberano Inernational Goju karate-doIt is necessary to conclude the essence in all training that the breathing of the Goju study be revealed as unique, very powerful in its attributes and manageable practice, and most practical when understood of its features.

The IBUKI BREATHING happens to be prevalent in many practices aside from the Goju Ryu , its foundation is based on the varying methods that I will describe in theory and practice. The source application is of the key which I relate to the C.O.R.E. principle once again as in Consolidated Origin of Reserved Energy©.

Let me refer to the infant child whose cry seem endless and without effort or even a break of the rhythm that otherwise show a significant release pattern. It would in fact be continued without a stop but for creating the effect it would have on the recipient (the worried Mom) who would panic or at least attempt to react.

This breathing is what we describe as the diaphragm breathing using the full lobes of the lungs that does purpose to oxygen use , but when used for effect as in matured instance (the grown person with a purposeful application to his breathing) as in endurance breathing…the sports person, the person on a specified exercise as in Yoga, or just the relaxed state of which is a recommended method of breathing to consolidate energy, this is the breathing of value and with a significance to recognizing the source of energy related exercise.

I will start with the position of the body as in relation to taking of the breath with a sound attention to origin, storage and release, and the contained source with use and deployment in reference to the Kata of the GOJU ideal…Sanchin and Tensho.

In the first exercise let me describe the sitting position with a difference and hence a specific reason of alignment to bring focus on the preparation to completion of the breathing.

  1. Sit your body on the edge of a chair comfortably setting your legs and feet in a normal spread position where balance of the body and leg setting feels secure. Your arms extend to rest your wrist on the top of the knees.
  2. Hold the body in a perfect vertical position by drawing the shoulders back into a position that forms a forward thrust of your chest out as a natural position of levering the body’s comfort mode.
  3. The breathing that I would now describe will take some practice but very soon will take precedent to the full intake of what diaphragm breathing is about. In the position set above, inhale without having to lift your chest but with effort force the entry to a total inhalation to the fill the entire lobe of your lungs. This will have an effect physically on the stomach bulging out.The course of this breath has now filled the cavity, your lungs to the depth. Upon exhaling this breath take the similar rhythm of releasing the air to completion with a tightening of your abdomen by squeezing the lower extremity of your groin area as in a lift followed by the tightening of the abdomen to complete this cycle of breathing.
  4. When having done the above put concentration of your thoughts or centralize the exercise to what will now be a point of focus on the central part of the body and that would be just below the navel. This will start an unusual feeling of strength developing as in being suddenly centred or even the feel of being anchored but with control from your inner source.
  5. In having done this, start the rhythmic action lowering the concern of forcing but natural movement with a more relaxed state. This will bring the understanding more pronounced as discovered by many practitioners. The Key principle is set in place by location, direction, and with arrival to the source of energy yours in the making will be a an awakening to the why, cause and effect can be the conduct of unexplained power surge does exist. To understand this is to be able to access to this when necessary.

History has prevailed with such a practice, much as in any formal study, the essence of discovery is knowing the truth.

This prerequisite to advance Martial Arts Training surpasses the physical state of motion when total training commits the practitioner to understanding the Science of application. In this study, I am committed to oblige the practice of the GOJU to its past, present, and future attributes. This was meant to be, and will be, for those that wish to study for an in depth reason and journey from within as with the masters and peers of old, to the dedicated Martial Artist that put Art before the claim of personal gain.

Written with dedication to the founder of the Goju Ryu-Chojun Miyagi, the grand master of Goju-Kai – Gogen Yamaguchi, the first Shihan of Hawaii Goju-Kai – Masaichi Oshiro.
